The Mother Awakening

“Motherhood is not something I do; it’s the water I swim in and the air that I breathe. I cannot be separated from motherhood anymore than the clouds could be taken from the sky or the sunlight from the full moon. We are a reflection of one another. Mother Awakening has taken me whole.”

“Motherhood is not something I do; it’s the water I swim in and the air that I breathe. I cannot be separated from motherhood anymore than the clouds could be taken from the sky or the sunlight from the full moon. We are a reflection of one another. Mother Awakening has taken me whole.”

It has changed me, as it does every mother. Yet because this journey of motherhood is so personal and specific to each mother I have been holding off writing this blog (even though my intuition and everything in me says write, express!). I also don’t want to exclude those who are not mothers of human children, as we birth and nurture many sacred beings into this world.

Yet still, I feel I need to write and speak for the massive spiritual awakening that is motherhood because it is so largely overlooked and maligned on the spiritual path. There is this sense that your spiritual journey somehow stops whilst you are a mum, only to be picked up again when your children are older. That for now you just have to make do with the practical and mundane aspects of life and ignore any spiritual leanings. Indeed traditional spirituality is greatly challenged by motherhood, where many spiritual practices that require hours of quiet alone time are simply not going to happen for most mums.

In my own experience and working with women in healing, Goddess Empowerments and coaching, it’s perhaps THE awakening of their lives, or at least a major and significant spiritual transformation. However, because of the intensity of the awakening experience, it can leave many mums overwhelmed, discombobulated and lost. There is the grief of losing your pre-mamahood innocence and the question of how to handle the gut and heart wrenching intensity of love and responsibility you feel for this little being who has magiced their way into your life. Because of these and many other aspects of the Mother Awakening, consciously owning and exploring motherhood as a spiritual awakening is, I believe, a priority for mums in order to fulfil their sense of purpose, self awareness and personal power. Even just taking the ‘facts’ of motherhood and the key emotional and psychological experiences had by mums, Motherhood has all the hall marks of a spiritual awakening:

  1. You undergo a physically and emotionally intense initiation experience of pregnancy and birth.
  2. You have a radical change in your identity.
  3. You give over perhaps 90% of your time to loving service of another.
  4. You experience a greater love than ever before that changes your whole understanding of love.
  5. You experience an increased sensitivity to the world and others joy and pain.
  6. You feel an increased responsibility to look after the planet and our future.
  7. You experience a natural movement towards creating community and (be it voluntary or necessary) open up to being supported more and supporting others more.
  8. Your closest relationships change and grow, with your partner especially.
  9. You see your parents in a whole new light – generally with more compassion, gratitude and appreciation.
  10. You suddenly gain a felt and real multigenerational view – you care about future generations and see backward to past generations with greater love and connection.
  11. You have what you would previously thought of as a super human capacity to give, without sleep.
  12. You might experience feeling totally lost in who you are, and yet so completely found and connected to a deeper confident self you never new existed.

Motherhood is a calling, we answer; even if we are unaware that we have done so, to become a mother is to say yes to a huge personal and spiritual transformation.

And motherhood teaches us that spiritual awakening in the midst of life looks different than we might be guided to expect…

Spirituality cannot be an abstraction from life… Quite simply there is no time and space for such spiritual transcendence. Your spirituality is happening in your life as a mother, your life has shifted fundamentally… yet you are the same person… yet you are different. If you are willing the mystic non dual wholeness will appear in your life, ordinary becomes extraordinary with every smile of your child, with experiencing how your body moves and changes through pregnancy, birth and nursing, with each ripple on the canvas of your connection to nature, to community and ever out into your life.

This is no workshop experiment of spirituality to test out and that you can retract from if it’s not for you. Rather you are here and a mother; it’s done and cannot be undone, however motherhood proceeds.

I discovered that as much as I knew that motherhood would be a significant transformation for me, my experience of what it is was different than I imagined… more natural, less curated or narrated. Love just is… Love just is the most normal, natural, every present part of my world because of my daughter, so unconditional and all pervasive that I cannot separate from it to take it apart, I can only act from within it. That does not mean everything is easy and motherhood is a breeze, Thea is teaching me every day and will I hope my whole life, more about truth and how to behave and be in alignment with loves command.

Spirituality is an embodied, full to bursting emotional, physical, mental, spiritual, energetic rollercoaster of movement and possibility. It’s so in the now that the ‘power of now’ is less of a spiritual concept and more of a practical reality that confronts us (since when did a child ever allow you to get out of the now?? – however much you wanted to reject it?!!).

In the Mother Awakening spirituality slips through the hands of the ego as water that will always return to its source. Imperfection, loosing control, physical and emotional surrender are all part of a day in the life of a mum. If spiritual awakening was about doing it the right way and improving yourself to help the ego feel good, you will find out pretty quickly in motherhood… because you will fail at ‘getting it right’ and being a model parent is exhausting.

She, the great Mother Awakening offers us a new route in and through life as the current of spirit through loving first, surrendering into the chaos and swimming in your emotions with compassion. The small things that used to bug you no longer matter, conversely your hunches of how to be and act well matter more. As such you can discover a new level of freedom and fierce confidence in living your truth as the Mother Awakening brings a profound reorientation of your life to what matters… if you let her…

I’m 11 months into this sacred journey as manifest through my little ones birth, yet it’s already timeless and I feel part of the ancient mother flow… Yet I’m still a newbie and humble to the grandmothers and mothers before me. I’m forever dancing this mystic experience of listening to love and feeling deep gratitude for this opportunity of Mother Awakening.

There is so much richness in our Mother Awakenings, all of which I want to honour for those who are new and not so new mums on their spiritual journey. I hope that if you are a mum, this blog gives you some validation of the huge and spiritually significant journey of motherhood that you are on. In writing this blog, I feel just at the start of expressing and honouring our individual and collective Mother Awakening. If this resonates with you, do join our conversation, I would love to hear your Mother Awakening.
